  “By pretending to be one of them?” Pete asked.

  “Yes, and you can’t convince me not to do it.” Slade started to open his mouth, but Codie pointed a finger at him. “And if you’re so damned worried, Mr. Sheppard, you can make sure Matthew is able to pay our utilities by giving him a raise while I’m gone.”

  Matthew stood so quickly that his wooden chair toppled backward, propping itself up against the cabinets. “What? How long are you planning to be gone?”

  “As long as it takes.”

  Pete stood then and Slade wasn’t about to be the only one sitting. Pete said, “Doing something like this is dangerous, Codie. I can’t let you do it.”

  Codie felt a fire in her gut, one she hadn’t felt simmer in a long time, and the heat made its way out through her nostrils, causing them to flare. “You can’t? Really, Pete?” She ground her jaws together and then turned around to grab the bags of clothes off the floor. She marched around the left side of the table near Slade and said, “Watch me.”

  She heard her ex-boyfriend say, “Codie, don’t do this,” and Matthew was freaking out, but she stormed into her bedroom and slammed the door shut. Out of all the things she’d done in the past year, infiltrating that church to find the truth felt the most right, the most real.

  And she was going to do it, men be damned.

  Jade C. Jamison was born and raised in Colorado and has decided she likes it enough to stay forever. Jade’s day job is teaching Creative Writing, but teaching doesn’t stop her from doing a little writing herself.

  Unfortunately, there’s no one genre that quite fits her writing. Her work has been labeled romance, erotica, suspense, and women’s fiction, and the latter is probably the safest and closest description. But you’ll see that her writing doesn’t quite fit any of those genres.
